New Faculty Essentials

Teaching Expectations

FERPA

Under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), authorization to access student educational records—either electronic or hard copy formats—is granted solely for the purpose of carrying out your assigned duties in conducting LIM College business. Student records are strictly confidential and information regarding student educational records may be shared only with other employees who have a need to know this information in order to perform their duties on behalf of the College. FERPA prohibits you from disclosing a student’s educational record to any other parties without prior consent from the student, except under specific, narrow exemptions. If you are reaching out to students about their educational record (e.g. grades), you must use LIM College Email.

Canvas Setup and Login

Regardless of teaching modality, faculty must log into Canvas weekly to grade assignments, respond to messages, post announcements, and/or participate in discussions. If you are teaching fully online courses, you are expected to log in more frequently to meet regular and substantive interaction requirements. Consistent engagement supports student learning and success.

Assignments and Due Dates posted

Assignments and due dates are set before classes begin. You may adjust pacing if the class needs to move more slowly, but any changes to due dates must be clearly communicated to students. Timely notice ensures transparency and supports student success. As mentioned previously, assignments must be submitted into Canvas.

Timely Grading and Feedback

Faculty are expected to grade promptly and provide meaningful, actionable feedback. Research shows that students are more likely to use feedback on future assignments when it is timely. If grading will be delayed, please inform your students.
