Semester dates:
The above schedules include the exam resit period, which occurs after the official end of the semester. Depending on their courses, LIM students may finish with their program earlier than these dates. Students are advised to keep the dates above in mind when booking flights, as class and exam schedules cannot be adjusted to suit a late arrival or an early departure. Exams and resit exams cannot be rescheduled or taken online if a student is not physically present at the time of the exam.
Accepted students will participate in a mandatory orientation at their host school prior to the start of the semester. The dates and times of the orientation will be provided to accepted students.
Application
Students must submit their completed application by the deadlines listed above under "Important Dates" to be considered for this program.
LIM College’s study abroad programs are competitive, as more applications are typically received than there are spots available. The following factors are considered when LIM selects candidates to participate in study abroad programs:
Students who are accepted into the program will be required to submit their personal and academic information to their host school along with a copy of the photo page of their passport. Further information on this process will be given to accepted students.
Orientation
All students are required to attend the LIM College Pre-Departure Orientation. Date, time and location are made available after acceptance into the program. Students must also attend Induction (Orientation) at AUAS and are required to arrange travel so they can do so. Orientation is typically held just prior to the start of each semester.
Courses
Once admitted into the program, students will be sent more information regarding courses that will be offered during their semester abroad. Accepted students must select courses from within the Faculty of Business and Economics. A list of courses that have been previously offered can be found here.
Students will be required to submit an LIM College Course Proposal Form to have courses evaluated prior to attending AUAS. Students must be registered for a minimum of 12 credit hours (or the equivalent) per term, including both courses abroad and online courses taken at LIM. Once accepted students have selected their preferred courses, have had them approved by LIM, and have been registered for these courses, they may not make any further changes to their schedules. AUAS has no Add/Drop period.
Students must meet with their Academic Advisor to ensure their courses will fit into their graduation plan.
Accommodations & Travel
The School of Business and Economics has agreements with several housing partners in Amsterdam for exchange student housing. Rooms are available for one or two semesters at various locations in Amsterdam. Students can opt for either a single studio with private facilities (private bedroom, kitchen and bathroom) or for a single room with shared facilities (private bedroom plus kitchen and bathroom shared with one-three other students), according to availability. All rooms have an Internet connection. Rental prices vary between 350 € and 750 € per month and rent includes Internet access, electricity, water and heating. It does not include local taxes. Students pay a housing fee, deposit and an administration fee to the housing partner.
Rooms are allocated subject to availability. The housing partners try to fulfill students’ requests for either shared or single accommodation when allocating spaces, but cannot guarantee that individual preferences can be met. Please note that the rental period for housing is fixed. It is not possible to get a refund in the event of late arrival or departure before the end of the rental period. Signature of the rental contract obligates you to fulfill the rental conditions.
Students also have the option of securing their own housing independently off campus. All housing costs are paid directly to the housing provider, which may be a student apartment company, a landlord, etc. depending on where the student chooses to live.
Students are responsible for booking and purchasing their own airfare.
Health Insurance
All students must submit proof to the Study Abroad Office that they are covered by overseas health insurance for the duration of their program abroad. Students are encouraged to have worldwide insurance which covers (at minimum) comprehensive hospitalization, prescription medication, medical evacuation, and repatriation of remains.
Program Cost
Students pay LIM College tuition to LIM College for the semester abroad. This does not cover airfare, housing, books, meals, or personal expenses, such as shopping. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Netherlands and the United States. Additional costs to consider (all amounts are approximations and in euros unless otherwise noted):
Students who receive financial aid can typically apply this aid to a semester abroad. All students who receive aid will be required to meet with a Student Financial Services Counselor prior to departure to discuss the status of their aid and complete any additional requirements.
Student Visa
Students who are American citizens will not be required to obtain a student visa, but they will need to apply for a residence permit for study (what is known as VVR) upon entering the Netherlands. AUAS will provide guidance through this process. Students must have a valid passport that expires no sooner than 6 months past the end of the exchange experience to apply for the visa and should be prepared to show that they have access to sufficient funds to cover their costs for the semester as part of the visa application process. Students are encouraged not to have a layover in a European country when they plan their initial travel to the Netherlands. Since students apply for and receive their residence permit only after arriving in the Netherlands, they risk being turned back by other European countries if they try to enter Europe (even for a short layover) without a permit or visa.
Arrival Services
AUAS provides arrival services for international students. Students will be picked up from the airport by AUAS staff, as long as they arrive on the designated day and time range. More information will be provided to accepted students.
