THE ARTS IN FLORENCE

Spend four amazing weeks living in the very center of Florence, Italy while earning 6 credits! Discover art, fashion, food and Italian culture in this faculty-led program. Students will take one art and culture course taught by an LIM faculty member and one elective course at the Florence University of the Arts. Courses are immersive and taught through hands-on workshops and excursions to Florence’s most important art, fashion, and cultural sites.

  • Requirements

    • Students must have completed their first year of college-level study at the time of the program. Only undergraduate students are eligible to participate.
    • Minimum of 2.75 GPA required; suggested minimum GPA is 3.0.
    • Students must be in good academic and financial standing to participate.
    • Students must apply by the deadline listed under "Important Dates."
    • Prerequisite: ENGL 1100 - English Composition

    In order to be considered for this program, applicants should submit the LIM College Arts in Florence Application

    LIM College’s study abroad programs are competitive, as more applications are typically received than there are spots available. The following factors are considered when LIM selects candidates to participate in study abroad programs:

    • Personal statement/essay: Original, succinct essays with well-thought out content will be rated highly.
    • Interview with Study Abroad Coordinator: Students should be prepared to speak about why they are a good candidate for the program to which they are applying.
    • GPA: The student’s LIM College GPA is taken into consideration.
    • Demonstrated interest: Applicants can increase their chance of being selected by attending information sessions and/or setting up a time to meet one-on-one with the Study Abroad Coordinator to discuss the program they are interested in applying for.
  • Credits

    The program consists of 2 courses within 4 weeks in Florence, Italy. Students will complete one Florence University of the Arts (FUA) course and one LIM art & culture course (STSA 2410 - Rebirth and Revolution: The Arts in Florence) for a total of six credits earned while abroad. Students will participate in excursions and cultural classes (including a guided walk around the city with gelato, museum and cultural site visits, and a leather workshop, among many others) as part of the program. The prerequisite for this course is ENGL 1100 - English Composition.

    The program is first and foremost an academic experience and participants are expected to prioritize the academic components of the program. In addition, students are responsible for ensuring that they have met any and all prerequisites for the LIM course, "STSA 2410 - Rebirth and Revolution: The Arts in Florence," prior to its start date (note that this may be earlier than the departure date for the travel component of the program).   • Accommodations & Travel

    Students will be placed in apartments in central Florence within commutable distance (not more than a 30 minutes' walk) of the FUA campus. The apartments are typical Italian apartments; they hold 2-8 students and bedrooms are double- or triple-occupancy. Apartments include furnishings, basic kitchen supplies, bed linens, washing machine, towels, air conditioning, and internet.

  • Health Insurance

    All participants will be covered by international health insurance, which is included in the program fee.

  • Program Cost

    The 2024 program cost is $6,490. This program fee will cover tuition for 6 credits, housing, entrance to all program museums and cultural sights, all workshops & activities, two meals, international health insurance, transportation from the Florence airport on arrival day, 24/7 Emergency hotline & services, and many optional student activities (pizza making, street food tours, day trips, aperitivo, city tours etc)

    The program fee does not cover airfare to and from Florence. Students are responsible for own airfare, return transportation to airport, & FUA course fee (FUA fee approximately $100)

    Students are also expected to independently cover all non-included meals, any entertainment and travel on free days, and their own shopping.

    The payment schedule is as follows:

    • $800 non-refundable deposit due December 8th, 2023 to secure a spot on the program
    • $2845 payment due January 12th, 2024
    • $2845 final payment due February 12th, 2024
  • Student Visa

    Students are required to have a valid passport that expires no sooner than six months past the end of the program. Visas are not required for American citizens. International students should contact the Study Abroad Coordinator prior to submitting their application to determine if a visa is required.

  • Pre-Departure Orientation Meetings

    All students are required to attend the LIM College Pre-Departure Orientation. In addition, students will be required to meet for several course sessions on zoom prior to the end of the Spring 2023 semester as part of their LIM art history course.
