Submitting your application
Apply during the intake period.
Applications for semester exchanges open one semester prior to the intended exchange period. This means that applications to study abroad in the fall open at the start of the spring semester, while applications for spring open during the summer. Submit your application before the deadline along with the required documents. These include:
For semester exchanges, applicants should indicate three (3) options for institutions they would like to attend. It is important to choose only institutions that you have carefully considered and wish to attend, as there is no guarantee that you will offered a place at your first choice. An interview with the Study Abroad Coordinator is required as part of the application process for semester exchange programs and some short term programs.
The application intake period varies for short-term study abroad programs. Students can expect to apply early in the fall semester for the winter study abroad, and midway through the fall semester for summer programs. Eligibility and document requirements are the same as semester exchanges. Some short-term programs also require an interview.
Accept your offer and get nominated
Accepted students will be notified by email and advised of the host institution they will be attending. The student must confirm their acceptance of the study abroad placement in order to be nominated. Following confirmation, the student’s contact information is forwarded to the host school which will contact the student and advise them of the next steps.
The process
Apply to the host school
The host institution will contact the study abroad applicant with instructions on how to submit an application to study abroad at that institution. Each institution has their own requirements for participation in their exchange program and will make the final decision on the applicant’s eligibility. Although most nominations are accepted, LIM College does not guarantee that all students will be accepted by the host institution.
Submit the required documents
The host institution may require timely submission of documents in order to provide the necessary documentation to apply for a visa if necessary. There may also be deadlines to submit transcripts and select courses for registration. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they are aware of, and are complying with, any deadlines stipulated by the host institution for the submission of documents. The SA Coordinator may advocate on a student’s behalf in the event of a missed deadline due to unforeseen circumstances, however, the final decision rests with the host institution.
Securing housing
Not all host institutions offer student housing. However, institutions usually provide resource information to assist exchange students in finding accommodation off campus. The exchange student should note housing application deadlines and apply early to secure accommodation prior to their arrival.
Register for courses
Exchange students should consult with an academic advisor at LIM College prior to course registration and select courses that align with their graduation plan. It is recommended that study abroad applicants have at least twelve (12) elective credits available so that they are able to choose from a wider range of courses that can be transferred back to LIM.
Before you go
Attend pre-departure Information Session
Outgoing exchange students are required to attend a mandatory pre-departure safety meeting about one month prior to leaving the U.S. The SA Coordinator will advise students of the date and time for this virtual meeting.
Submit health clearance and student agreement forms
All outgoing students are required to complete and submit a Student Agreement/Code of Conduct form to the Study Abroad Coordinator prior to departure. A Health Clearance form must be completed by a licensed healthcare provider no more than four (4) months prior to departure and submitted to the Counseling Office by emailing limcounseling@limcollege.edu.
