Modern Approaches to Teaching

This year's conference will focus on Modern Approaches to Teaching. We'll start the conference with a faculty presentation and then the OLI Team will talk about newest technology disrupting higher education.

Session 1: Music, Memory, and Free Association

Facilitator: Professor Scott Wordsman, Arts and Sciences
Much can be learned from Freudian psychoanalysis, Kantian aesthetics, and Proust's ideas of involuntary memory in regards to the ways in which sound and music can be used to improve the inter- and intrapersonal lives of students. Free-writing assignments set to different styles and types of music enable students to relieve themselves of anxious triggers and stressful burdens, especially in the wake of the most recent global-historical trauma event (Covid). Professor Scott Wordsman has been experimenting with these ideas in the classroom in order to improve focus, attention span, and overall student engagement and connectivity.

Session 2: Rethinking Post-pandemic Rigor in Higher Education

Facilitator: Professor Nachum Turetzky, Arts and Sciences

With the expansion of online teaching, rigor has been a great concern for many higher education institutions in recent pre-pandemic history. Some schools had created systems and tools to ensure rigor. But the pandemic threw things off and it seems that there is a renewed need to examine and develop tools to ensure rigor. To support this conclusion, first, I intend describe my experience in teaching online for about 12 years. Then, I will claim how online teaching became diluted because of the pandemic. Finally, I will discuss how the current return to “normality” – online and in person – presents a difference in students’ mood and requires a fresh institutional thinking and action, at least in terms of rigor.

Session 2: AI-Powered Learning: How ChatGPT and Other Tools are Changing Education

Facilitators: Chu Cheung and Deepa Rao-Sisario (OLI Team)

At this point, we’ve all heard about ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot making waves in just about every industry. In this session, the OLI team will share what we’ve learned about ChatGPT (and other AI Tools) to date.

We will talk about the benefits of AI in education, demonstrate the use of ChatGPT and other AI tools, explore use cases of ChatGPT in higher education, and have the opportunity to discuss and share their ideas with others. By the end of this session, we hope that you will have a better understanding of how AI can be used to enhance teaching and learning in higher education and feel more comfortable using ChatGPT as a tool in your work.
